Diamond grading

The 4Cs of diamond quality

The 4Cs of diamonds refer to cut, colour, clarity and carat and are the universal standards for assessing a diamond's quality.  Combined, these four attributes influence the appearance and price of a diamond.

Cut refers to the quality of craftsmanship in shaping the diamond, its proportions, polish and symmetry.  The cut impacts how light is reflected and refracted, thus affecting its brilliance, fire and scintillation. If a diamond is cut disproportionately the stone's sparkle is diminished making it appear dull.

Cut is the most important component of the 4Cs.  We only sell diamonds that have an Excellent or Ideal cut.

Colour refers to the degree to which a diamond is colourless. Generally, the clearer the stone is, the higher its value.  Colour impacts the ability for light to pass through the stone. The more colour a stone has the less light that can pass through it, making the stone appear dull.  Lab grown diamonds are grown in a controlled environment, so they don't face the same mineral contamination issues that impact the colour of natural diamonds. Diamonds are graded from D-Z with D being colourless and Z having the most colour. Our jewellery only uses diamonds graded D-G (colourless and near colourless).

Clarity describes the presence or absence of inclusions and flaws in the diamond. Clarity is graded according to the number of imperfections that exist within a stone. When a diamond is growing, it is common for microscopic impurities to become trapped within the diamond surface. These imperfections are typically only visible under 10x magnification.  Diamonds with fewer impurities will attract a higher price.

There are eleven clarity grades ranging from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3).  We only source diamonds with a VS2 clarity or higher.

Carat refers to a diamond's weight, not its size.  One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams.  The larger the carat weight of a diamond the more expensive the diamond will be.

Shape refers to the geometric appearance of the stone such as brilliant (round), princess (square), cushion, oval, emerald, marquise, asscher and pear. A diamond's brilliance comes from the number of facets that reflect the light and create sparkle and fire.  Brilliant cut stones have the most facets while emerald cut stones are step cut and have fewer facets, thus less sparkle, but offer a transparent and sleek look.  Shape also impacts the perceived size of the stone.  Carat-for-carat, elongated stones such as oval, radiant and pear cut appear larger than brilliant and princess cut.

All our diamonds over 0.25 carats are certified by the International Gemological Institute (IGI) and come with a diamond report.
